Epoxy concrete coatings are an excellent way to turn old or new concrete into practicle and attractive flooring that can be used in home, retail and commercial/industrial buildings to dress up concrete flooring. Epoxy floors have good chemical resistance and alow for easy cleaning without dusting of concrete.
Concrete floors must be well prepared prior to installation of epoxy coatings. Typically concrete floors requires to be grinded or scarified prior to the application of epoxy coating in order for the epoxy to adhere to the concrete properly. Once the concrete floor has been prepared, as standard practice, two coats of 100% epoxy is applied. First thin coat is applied, and followed by second coat which is thicker and typically a final coat.
It takes usually 24 hrs before foot traffic can commence and it is recommended that no heavy objects are to be placed onto the newly epoxied concrete floor for about 5 days so as to allow the epoxy to fully cure. Caution in cold or humid conditions drying and curring times may vary significantly. If time and weather condition are a factor on your project, we then recommend the use of a fairly new product called Polyaspartic sealer.
Polyaspartic has similar properties as epoxy in that it goes down thick as epoxy but the significant advantage of Polyaspartic is that it dries and cures very rapidly and is more chemical and abrassion resistant than epoxy with the same high gloss finish as epoxy. Polyaspaspartic typically costs nearly twice as much for the product as epoxy but the advantages of time saving and durability of Polyaspartic can provide can minimize down town and is not temprature sensitive as epoxy coatings. One other major advantage that Polyaspartic has over epoxy coatings is that Polyaspartic is UV resistance where most epoxy coating are not UV resistant and can be used outdoors or where there is a ot of sun light which will yellow the epoxy coating over time.
